What Is Your Health Age — and Can You Improve It?
We all know our chronological age.
But there is another number worth thinking about: your health age.
Your health age is a simple way of thinking about how your everyday health and lifestyle compare with what we would expect for someone of your age.
It isn't an official medical diagnosis or a number your doctor can necessarily give you. Instead, it is a reminder that getting older doesn't have to mean simply accepting poorer health.
And for Malaysians approaching or passing 40, this becomes increasingly important.
Your 40s and 50s: A Time to Pay Attention
As we get older, it can become easier to gain weight around the waist, become less active and develop habits that are harder to change.
At the same time, conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol become increasingly important health concerns.
Malaysia's National Health and Morbidity Survey 2023 found that:
15.6% of Malaysian adults had diabetes
54.4% were overweight or obese
54.5% had abdominal obesity
29.9% were physically inactive
And an astonishing 95.1% did not consume the recommended five servings of fruit and vegetables each day.
These numbers aren't meant to frighten us.
They're a reason to start paying attention.
Your Waistline May Tell You Something
For many people, one of the first noticeable changes after 40 is around the middle.
The waistline gradually gets bigger.
Perhaps the shirt that fitted perfectly five years ago is suddenly a little tighter.
It can be tempting to put this down simply to getting older.
But maintaining a healthy body weight and body composition is an important part of healthy ageing. Malaysia's Ministry of Health specifically identifies maintaining healthy body weight and body composition as part of its dietary guidance for older people.
The goal isn't necessarily to look younger.
It's to feel better, move better and stay independent for longer.
Can You Lower Your Health Age?
There is no magic pill that turns back the clock.
But there are many things within your control.
🥗 1. Look at what's on your plate
You don't have to give up Malaysian food.
Nasi lemak, roti canai, mee goreng, curries and our favourite kuih are part of our culture and our enjoyment of food.
The key is balance, frequency and portion size.
Try increasing:
- Vegetables
- Fibre-rich foods
- Lean proteins
- Whole foods
- Water
And reduce excessive:
- Added sugar
- Sugary drinks
- Highly processed foods
- Fried foods
- Large portions of refined carbohydrates
Malaysia's dietary guidelines for older people highlight concerns around diets high in fat, salt and sugar, as well as increasing sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and inadequate fruit and vegetable intake.
🚶 2. Move Your Body
You don't necessarily need an expensive gym membership.
A regular walk can be a fantastic place to start.
Malaysia's Ministry of Health notes that consistent walking can help with weight management, blood pressure, stress and the body's ability to process sugar.
The WHO also recommends supporting physical activity among older adults, including people living with chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.
So ask yourself:
How much did I move today?
Even a little more than yesterday is a step in the right direction.
😴 3. Don't Ignore Sleep and Stress
Health isn't just about food.
Sleep, stress, relationships, activity and mental wellbeing all form part of the bigger picture.
NHMS 2023 reported that 37.7% of Malaysian adults experienced insufficient sleep.
Sometimes improving your health isn't about adding another complicated task to your day.
It can be as simple as:
Eat a little better.
Walk a little more.
Sleep a little longer.
Stress a little less.
And repeat.
